RC Basics: What To Carry When You Crawl

After spending a ton of time preparing your truck for the trail day, you're going to find out that breakdowns can be quite common, no matter what parts you use and no matter how prepared your rig is. As for myself, I wanted to limit these breakdowns and bring the necessary tools and parts with me to be able to continue the trail. Through trial and error, it took me time to figure out what I actually needed, but hopefully this list will provide some insight to what sort of things you might need during a day of RC'ing.

First thing you'll need is a backpack for all your items and a multi-cell tool box. So what to put in there?

My common items needed are:

  • A good multi tool
  • Hex wrench
  • Extra batteris for transmitter
  • Extra screws/nuts/bolts
  • Loctite
  • Extra servo horn
  • Extra hubs and knuckles
  • Shock oil
  • Back up shocks
  • Extra diff gears
  • Electrical tape
  • Marine grease
  • Pliers
  • Grub screws
  • Extra wheel parts
  • Flashlight
  • Rag for hands

  • Some of the items that I carry for filming for YouTube are:
  • GoPro silver (Hero 4)
  • Extra GoPro (Hero)
  • GoPro mounts
  • GoPro case cover
  • Mini tripod
  • Egg timer
  • Camera lenses
  • Micro cloth
  • Extra SD cards
  • Back up camera battery
  • Floaty attachment
  • Cell phone for pictures

  • Some personal items could include:
  • Gloves/hat/scarf - Winter
  • Water/sunscreen/bug spray - Summer
  • Bear spray
  • GPS

  • My best advise for what to bring on any trail is whatever you broke or needed on your last breakdown. The key here is to keep the fun going as long as possible, trail breakdowns are very common and you should expect it. Some folks I know will even bring extra ESC's and motors or even a back up rig! Some folks don't bring anything at all and that's fine too. For me I like to come prepared for anything so work together, share parts, and keep the team trailing!
