Axial Wraith Upgrades Tips and Tricks – Transmission

The Stock Internals
The transmission in the Axial Wraith is not the same as the AX10 or SCX10 transmission. Since the Axial Wraith is newer, it uses the same gears but also incorporates a newer version of the rear case and steel outputs. Since the Axial Wraith ones are newer, not all upgraded listed for AX10 or SCX10 will work with the Wraith. It is important to note that the center and final gears in the transmission are just stock plastic; they are very easy to break and easily lead to failure inside the truck’s transmission.

The Stock spur and Pinion
The Stock pinion gear is 20 tooth and the stock spur gear is 80 tooth, which are standard for 48 pitch gears. The gearing designed for the Axial Wraith is aimed more for the speed than for crawling.

Upgrading the Internals
It is not necessary to replace all the gears inside the transmission right after you get the Axial Wraith. We suggest you to play with it for a while first. Run it until you think it is not powerful enough. If you are trying to make the Wraith tougher and stronger, then you can pick up a set of hardened gears. There is an important friendly reminder to remember, do not get a unit with the outputs machined into it. The Axial Wraith’s rear output is longer, so it is needed to get a metal gear that has the same dimension has the stock gear.

Upgrading the Spur and Pinions
There are different adjustment for crawling or speed when upgrading the spur and pinions.

For Crawling, you would want a better low end control while crawling. It is better to go with a setup in the 84-87 tooth spur gear range with a 14- 18 tooth pinion range. This would definitely help taking stress off the motor and it will make your equipment last longer. Anything larger than 87 tooth will need you to remove the spur gear cover on the transmission.

For Speed, the stock gearing is very good already. However, if you want more power in this truck you would need to upgrade it because the 48 pitch spur will be stripped after. You may try to replace both spur and pinion with 32 pitch gears. The stock gearing of 80/20 makes a 4:1 reduction. It is better to stay within the same range. When selecting a new upgrade pinion and spur, be careful of the diameter of the gears. Anything too large would require you the remove the spur gear cover.
