Common Mistakes When Starting Nitro Engine

1. Avoid pulling the starter if your engine is flooded, otherwise it will snap. So how will you know if the engine is flooded? Simple. When the cord becomes difficult to pull, this is usually when your engine is flooded. To get the excess fuel out of the engine, just take out your glow plug, turn your car upside down, give the pull starter a couple of yanks, and the fuel will come out. (Note that you should NEVER pull the cord out more than 20 cm, otherwise it will bend the spring and/or snap the cord.)

2. Melting the Nylon Drive Gear – It is always a good practice to start the car with the wheels off the ground and the brake off. When you try to start the car, DO NOT attempt to restrain the car like you're giving it CPR, the clutch will overheat and melt the gears. Another reason why you should start your car off the ground is to prevent the car fly off your hand and run off on its own.

3. Always check to see if the brake is off before starting the car. To check if your brake is off, push the car forward with the engine NOT running. If the car is hard to push, the brake is on. This will cause the clutch to overheat and melt the nylon gears. So make sure your brake is off before starting the car!

4. Do not replace the nylon gear with a metal gear! Metal on metal wears out fairly quickly when not lubricated and you cannot lubricate the gears as it would pretty much turn your gear into a dust magnet. Weight is also another issue as the lighter the car, the quicker it will accelerate.

5. Avoid leaving your glow heater on your glow plug when you’re not trying to start the car otherwise it will burn out quickly.

That’s it for now. Have fun with your nitro cars!
