For crawlers, you want weight. Not just any heavy materials - they have to be tough enough to survive axle hang-ups and be mounted low enough on the chassis to keep the wheels firmly down for increased traction. Make no mistake; crawlers have to get fat. Uh, PHAT.

Boom Racing's been making some nice SCX10 aluminum hop-ups for a while now. Following on from their acknowledgement that people want weight in their line of 'EVO' heavy-duty beadlock aluminum wheels, they've followed up with these cast steel axle housings.

Made to match the standard Axial SCX10 axle parts in looks and compatibility with stock parts, the difference is immediately apparent when you pick them up. They're heavy. Heavy doesn't quite cover it - these are some of the heaviest 1/10 axle housings on the market. They weigh a full 180g. Per housing.

Yes, that's almost a full fifth of a kilo. For axle housings. For comparison's sake, the stock SCX10 housings weigh approximately 50 grams.

A pair of PHAT axle housings for front and rear would weigh three hundred and sixty grams in total. Thanks to some simple math we're left with the following conclusion: swapping in some PHAT axle housings would add a full 260g to your crawler. These are some really beefy, heavy-duty parts, and they're not at an outrageous price either. In practice, this means you're getting a full quarter-plus-kilo of weight keeping your tires down in the front and rear, making unlucky flips or turnovers that much less likely. More weight translates to more traction and better crawling performance, and the PHATs have been certified for their toughness and prowess at the latest RECON G6 event. Although with that amount of weight, you'd definitely want a high-torque motor to go with it.
