Here's the review in all its glory! Enjoy!

Review:

It arrived in a small, heavy and well packaged box. My first impression when I opened the box and started to remove the plastic trees was of joy. I was happy to see that the rear door were similar to the Tamiya design and there was aluminum angles that would also match the Tamiya containers. This told me that it was going to look similar to the Tamiya 40' container I already have...and I was right.

With the exception of the material used for the side panels, just about every part was the same. Hercules Hobby uses a 2mm White plastic for the container sides and top. The bottom is a single piece of aluminum. The plastic sides/top are protected with a brown sheet to prevent damage during shipping and I decided to keep this on the inside of the panels to give it a “insulated” look.

As I already noted, the rear side (door side) of the container is very similar to the Tamiya design. The container came with only 4 door pins (2 short/2 long) even thought there was enough plastic parts to have 4 pins per door. The door hinges are a poor design, as the pins will fall out. I fixed this by crimping the bottom of the hing to stop the pin from dropping out. Seems to be working so far.

The doors open and close with ease. The instructions were not very clear on how to do it. I ended up “reading between the lines” and figured it out. While speaking about the manual, I would also like to point out that the manual was easy to follow, but needs improvement. There was no reference to the bag number containing the hardware, unlike Tamiya. This takes the guess work out of knowing if your going to run out of hardware or not. There was actually one 2mm screw missing from the kit...but a few others left over.

The finished Hercules Hobby 20' Refrigeration Container fits perfectly onto the Tamiya container trailer and I finished the build in about 6 hours. Since the container is a refer type (food grade), I decided to leave it white as it seems like the right color. The white, flat panels look great and have a nice shine.

At first I was very skeptical about the quality of the decals with this kit. I placed the side/top/bottom panels on top of the decals to “flatten” them out while I did the build. I did this because it looked like the decals were already coming off the sheet and I was worried that because of this they were not going to stick properly to the container. When it came time to put the decals on, I was very happy to see that I was all wrong about the decal quality. Turns out this is some of the best decals I've seen so far to install. They have a clear plastic cover over them that is removed once the decal is put on, leaving a flawless finish. The decals appear to have been painted on, even the letters! I'm sure the white background helps with this appearance.

Overall I am pleased with the quality and finish of this Hercules Hobby 1:14 Scale 20' Refrigeration Container. To the best of my knowledge, Tamiya does not offer a 20' container kit, so its nice to have this option out there for us. And yes, Hercules Hobby offers a 20' container trailer as well...in all aluminum if that's what you want.

The cost of this kit was $91.8 USD and ATees.com provided the container for this review. Photos were taken in Vancouver, BC on September 1st, 2015.
